I'm pretty new to this whole LJ thing, so please be patient as I try to figure it out or mess up some kind of LJ netiquette and please feel free to correct me if I do something wrong.
So why did I decide to take the plunge you ask. Or maybe you aren't but I'll tell you anyway.
Mostly it's because I love Supernatural and could spend hours thinking and talking about it. Fortunately for you all, I don't actually have huge amounts of time to do this so I imagine my updates will be sporadic at best.
You also may be asking why an "Unapologetic Dean Fan?" Well let me just say upfront that I love both these characters (probably to an unhealthy degree) but you'll find that I almost always sympathize with Dean.
It's always hard to pinpoint why people get attached any particular character. In my case, there are a number of reasons for the overwhelming DeanLove. As an eldest sibling with a younger brother and sister who are just growing out of their "all about me phases," I definitely identify with him on a personal level. I also find Jensen Ackles' portrayal of Dean Winchester incredibly compelling. He and the writers have done such a fabulous job of letting us see inside his head and inside his heart. The total hotness and snarky badboy facade hiding a huge and vulernable heart, doesn't hurt either.
Dark Angel's resident dogboy Joshua once described Alec (also played by Jensen of course) as "tricks 'n treats with lots of pretty colours" on the surface but underneath "darkness and confusion." The quote is just as, if not more apropo of Dean Winchester.
Now I'm not at all saying that I find Sam uninteresting or unsympathetic. In fact Dean wouldn't be the character I love without his Sammy and Supernatural wouldn't be my obsession without its dysfunctional dynamic duo. I think Jared Padalecki brings a sweetness to Sammy that often elevates the character above the writing. But it's sort of like when your best-friend breaks up with the significant other who has also become your friend. You can see that they may both be at fault, but you kind of automatically take your friend's side because, well, you ARE BFFs.
I can recognize when Dean is wrong or insensitive or even cruel, but it's easy for me to understand the motivation and most often forgive him for it. I think the writers have taken great pains (until now) to make sure we eventually understand where Dean is coming from. I'm not sure they've been as generous with Sam. Most times when Sammy irritates me, it's because of anvilous writing and Jared's unfortunate habit of sounding judgmental rather than affectionately mocking.
I should also say that I don't think Dean is better written because of any type of favoritism on the part of Kripke or the writers. I just think that in the first season especially, Sam was a much more transparent character who would naturally generate empathy from the audience just because of his circumstances -- the dead girlfriend, kicked out by his Dad, just wants to feel safe, etc. I think TPTB just felt they needed to work harder to "peel back the layers" for Dean whose primary characteristic is to deflect and dissemble.
So that's my perspective as we head into the winter hiatus of the second season.
Did I warn ya or what about the rambling and the DeanLove?
